Jordan “Picasso” Parks ha concesso un’intervista esclusiva a BasketUniverso. La 22 enne ala americana, in forza alla Pallacanestro Trieste 2004, sta dimostrando in questa stagione di Serie A2 girone Est tutto il suo valore e si è rivelato uno dei migliori stranieri del campionato, con una media di 16.7 punti e 9.7 rimbalzi a partita. Queste le parole del promettente giovane rilasciate alla nostra redazione.
Com’è stato il tuo primo anno in Italia? Come ti sei trovato a Trieste?
It was pretty good, I was able to develop my game and I start actually play much 2 position instead of 3. I was able to concentrate, because here in Trieste you’re kind away from stuff so it’s easy to keep my mind on just basketball. Trieste is very beautiful, it is different from New York city so I like that and, you know, it is quite, I don’t like the noising stuff because the City can be annoying sometimes. People here are very nice and inviting so it was easy to transfer my living here.
E’ stato abbastanza positivo, qui sono riuscito a migliorare e ho cominciato a giocare anche come due e non solo come tre. Qui a Trieste, lontano da varie distrazioni, sono riuscito a concentrarmi e a pensare solo alla pallacanestro. Trieste poi è molto bella, mi piace, è molto diversa da New York. E’ silenziosa rispetto a quest’ultima, perché a volte i posti rumorosi possono risultare fastidiosi. Le persone qui sono gentili e ospitali e ciò ha influito positivamente sul mio trasferimento qui, è stato facile ambientarmi.
Quindi con i tifosi hai un bel rapporto? E con i compagni di squadra?
With the fans I’m a pretty social guy. My fans come up and talk to me, I speak with them. Some fans write me on social media I respond. I don’t really do much, if I can make someone happy by just me responding to them, it’s not problem with me. My teammates, you know, this guys are so kind so we got along very well. Few of them help me actually become the player I’m now. This is a much different game that it is in America so I had to make some changes and this guys like Pec, Matteo and Stefano helped me.
Con i tifosi sono abbastanza socievole, parlo molto con loro. Alcuni fan mi scrivono sui social e gli rispondo. Non faccio molto, se posso rendere felice qualcuno rispondendogli lo faccio tranquillamente. I miei compagni di squadra sono molto gentili e andiamo molto d’accordo. Molti di loro mi hanno aiutato a diventare il giocatore che sono ora. Qui il gioco è diverso rispetto all’America e ho dovuto fare dei cambiamenti e Pecile, Canavesi e Bossi mi hanno aiutato.
Quali sono secondo te le differenze tra l’NCAA e la Serie A2?
In Ncaa the preparation they do is ridicolous, you do some crazy things: waking up at 5 o clock in the morning and working out conditioned and tuned for hours. It’s good because the game in college it’s very competitive, when you work out you’re competing against your teammates wich is making you really work hard but here you had to have a mental focus and you think “ok, I have to give better” There is not more competition running the court with other people but more individual.
In NCAA la preparazione atletica è assurda, fai cose folli come svegliarti alle 5 di mattina e allenarti e devi essere in forma sempre, per molte ore. Il lato positivo è che il gioco lì è molto competitivo, mentre ti alleni sei in competizione con i tuoi compagni di squadra e ciò ti porta a lavorare sodo. In Italia, invece, devi usare molto di più la mente e ti concentri molto di più pensando “ok, devo fare meglio”. Qui non c’è molta competizione in campo ma si lavora più sull’individualità.
Quindi, secondo te, il basket americano è molto più fisico?
In american basket you catch a lot of contact when you’re jumping. The physicality is not different but how people use their body is very much different. It’s basketball so it’s pretty much the same.
Nel basket americano c’è più contatto fisico mentre salti verso il canestro. La fisicità non è diversa ma è diverso il modo in cui le persone usano il corpo, qui, in Italia, l’approccio è anche molto più mentale che fisico. Anche se alla fine, è sempre basketball, è più o meno identico ovunque.
Immaginavi di poter essere così determinante nella stagione di Trieste?
I really don’t know ‘cause whene I first came here I was exactly show what they want in my route to be, what they want to me to do so I was just trying to get the job done and tryin’ to play the best that I can play and (then) feed the system, so now it’s amazing what I’ve been able to do on the court and what they allowed me to do so it’s a very good situation.
Non saprei, sicuramente venire qui era esattamente quello che volevo fare; ho solo cercato di fare il mio lavoro, giocare nel migliore dei modi e aiutare la squadra. È sorprendente quello che sono riuscito a fare e ciò che mi hanno permesso di fare sul campo, è una situazione molto positiva.
Credi nella forza della tua squadra? Pensi che Trieste possa tranquillamente raggiungere i play off?
Oh, yeah, definitly we can deal with play off. We’ve showed we’re ready to fight. We have the condition to play in this game. I can’t speak for other teams but I don’t think a lot of teams are doing what we do. We don’t stop! In some of the games I’ve played, in the fourth quarter the energy was gone but we were steel able to keep going’ and play the way we were playing in the firts quarter. We have to do the same thing in the play-off.
Certamente sì, possiamo tranquillamente fare i conti con i play off. Abbiamo dimostrato di essere pronti. Abbiamo le qualità giuste per giocarcela con tutti. Non posso parlare per le altre squadre ma credo che nessun’altra squadra sia riuscita a fare ciò che facciamo noi. Non ci fermeremo! In alcune partite che ho giocato ho notato che nel quarto periodo spesso le energie venivano a mancare, ma siamo stati comunque bravi a giocare come fatto nel primo quarto. Dobbiamo fare la stessa cosa nei play-off.
Come giudichi, fino ad ora, la tua stagione?
I think I’ve shown magic improvement, from the first game to now I think I’ve completly changed and I think I stepped into a much big row that I was expected to be in and not just for me, for my coaches for the society and for everyone. I think I’m heaving a pretty year, of course you can always be better but I work to be the best I can.
Credo di aver dimostrato incredibili miglioramenti rispetto alla prima partita giocata e credo di essere cresciuto più di quello che mi aspettavo. Non sono solo io a pensare ciò, ma è la stessa cosa anche per gli allenatori, la società e tutti gli altri. Credo che la mia stagione sia stata molto positiva, ovviamente, si può sempre migliorare ma, sto facendo del mio meglio.
Sei consapevole di essere uno degli stranieri più forti della Serie A2?
It’s not something I wouldn’t like so it’s nice to be able to play hard and receive feed back from the fans and the people around, because I play basketball with love and passion. I don’t focus on it but, of course, being one of the most important (maybe one of the best) it’s a good feeling.
È stata una cosa inaspettata, è bello riuscire a giocare bene e ricevere positività dai tifosi e dalle persone intorno. Io gioco a basket per amore e per passione. Essere uno dei giocatori più importanti, forse uno dei migliori, è una bella sensazione benché non mi concentri troppo su questo.
Tra i tuoi connazionali c’è qualche giocatore che ti ha colpito maggiormente?
My favourite challenge this season was definitely playing against Powell from Treviso, we’ve played two times in the season, he’s a very good player and I liked playing with him.
La gara che ho preferito in questa stagione è stata quella giocata contro Powell di Treviso, abbiamo giocato contro per due volte, è un ottimo giocatore e mi è piaciuto affrontarlo.
Qual’è il tuo rapporto con coach Dalmasson? Cosa hai imparato da lui?
Very cool, he doesn’t speak very much english so he doesn’t say much but when we do talk he likes to leaf allow with me, he’s a very good guy. He trusted in to me and he trusted my play and allowed me to do what I need to do on the court so that’s the biggest thing for me, I feel confortable. He definitly teach me how to play more under control, I was a super under control guy.
È molto buono, anche se non parla molto inglese, ma in generale parla poco, è una brava persona. Mi ha dato fiducia personale e nel gioco e mi ha concesso di fare sul parquet quello di cui avevo bisogno, è la cosa più grande per me, mi fa sentire a mio agio. Mi ha educato a giocare con più controllo e disciplina.
Infine una domanda sulla prossima stagione: pensi di restare a Trieste?
Right now the plan is to stay in Trieste, the city and the society are showing so much love. Right now I’ll be back in Trieste.
Al momento il piano è quello di rimanere a Trieste, la città mi sta dimostrando molto amore. Quindi, ripeto, per come stanno le cose al momento, rimarrò a Trieste.
