E’ stata una decisione della dirigenza, ma per il futuro della franchigia questo e altro: Doc Rivers ha rinunciato alla carica di “President of Basketball Operations” e tornerà a ricoprire solo il ruolo di allenatore ai Los Angeles Clippers, come riportato da ESPN. Nonostante ciò, il tecnico nativo di Chicago continuerà ad avere una voce importante nell’organizzazione e nella collaborazione con Lawrence Frank, ossia il suo vice appena promosso alla carica.
Riguardo a questa mossa dirigenziale, si è espresso il proprietario della franchigia Steve Ballmer:
“I’ve owned the team for three years now, and I really better understand what an owner’s responsibility is -and it turns out that running a franchise and coaching are two enormous and different jobs. The notion that one person can fairly focus on them and give them all the attention they need isn’t the case. To be as good as we can be, to be a championship franchise, we need two functioning strong people building teams out beneath them. There needs to be a healthy discussion and debate with two strong, independent minded people. There are different relationships that a player needs to have with the coach and the front office. Doc put Lawrence in charge of the non-coaching aspects of the front office last year, and he’s done a fantastic job. I want each of them to dig in and do what they do best. Lawrence has come on so strong in that role, and that has helped us go down this path.”
(Possiedo la squadra da tre anni ormai e davvero capisco meglio cosa sia la responsabilità dell’essere proprietario e ciò rivela che gestire una franchigia e allenare siano due diversi e grandi lavori. Non è proprio il caso che una persona possa equamente concentrarsi e dare tutta l’attenzione di cui entrambi hanno bisogno. Per essere onesti, per essere una squadra da titolo, abbiamo bisogno di due forti figure funzionanti per costruire le squadra su entrambi i fronti. Ci sono diverse relazioni che un giocatore ha bisogno con il coach e l’ufficio. Doc (Rivers) ha messo Lawrence (Frank) come responsabile degli aspetti non allenanti del front office l’anno scorso e ha fatto un lavoro fantastico. Voglio che entrambi ci diano dentro e facciano del loro meglio. Lawrence (Frank) si è fatto fortemente avanti in quel ruolo e ci ha aiutato a proseguire su questa strada)
